As the island progresses through the seasons, Guernsey has something different to offer every month. From different weather conditions to diverse scenery and a variety of exciting events on Guernsey’s calendar. No matter which month you choose to visit Guernsey, the island will welcome you with open arms and treat you to an incredible experience. There is arguably no best month to visit Guernsey, however, there may be the best month for you personally, depending on the holiday you wish you have on this glorious Channel Island.
Guernsey in January
In the depths of winter and following the rush of the festive season, January is one of the quietest months for tourism in Guernsey. The island is extremely peaceful and you can enjoy what Guernsey has to offer without crowds. The island’s walking trails, country lanes and coastal paths are tranquil, a time when you can explore for hours on end without meeting another soul. Guernsey’s scenery also boasts a unique look this time of year with crisp mornings and January frost creating exquisite winter landscapes. While the chance is low, snow is also a possibility this month and you could have the rare experience of a Guernsey snow blanket. Although many of the island’s top attractions are closed, there is still plenty on offer including a selection of Guernsey museums that are open year-round.
Guernsey in February
Retaining a chill in the air, February is a great month to visit Guernsey if you are in search of a winter escape. Make the most of the island’s wintery quietness and admire the scenery as you stroll or cycle around the island, taking in the beauty of Mother Nature in hibernation. After a morning of exploring, indulge in a spa afternoon at one of Guernsey’s incredible hotels; it is the month of love after all. Plus, February is a great time to visit Guernsey as a family while the kids are on half-term break. A selection of Guernsey attractions that are closed over the winter will open exclusively for half term offering a quieter experience than if you visit during the peak summer months.
Guernsey in March
Moving into the shoulder season of spring, the island remains relatively quiet but the weather is more comfortable. If you are not a fan of the cold weather, March is a great time to enjoy a relatively warmer climate while still experiencing lower crowd levels. Many attractions open up into their off-peak season, providing visitors with a quieter experience and cheaper prices. Wildlife is at its peak in March, the breeding season for the likes of lambs and Atlantic seal pups. From mid-March, puffins arrive on the island to breed. Plus, if you fancy a spot of island hopping, migrant birds return to Alderney towards the end of March.
Guernsey in April
Spring has sprung and the island returns to its peak vibrancy as it is transformed by colourful flowers, luscious plants and abundant wildlife. Spring walks are simply delightful with the temperatures warming up and Guernsey’s trails coming back to life. April is also a perfect time to visit Guernsey’s stunning parks and gardens, including Saumarez Park and Candie Gardens. Any Guernsey attractions that are closed for the winter are typically fully open by April, allowing you to explore everything the island has to offer outside of the peak season. Spring also brings a variety of festivals to the island, including The Guernsey Literary Festival and The Guernsey Photography Festival.
Guernsey in May
Teetering on the edge of summer, May is one of the best months for Guernsey in terms of weather. Most days are sunny and mild, making it enjoyable to explore the island, however, there is also the occasional day of heat, perfect for hitting the beach before the peak summer crowds arrive. There is so much to see and do throughout the month of May that visitors are truly spoiled for choice. Not only are all attractions open and the weather great enough to enjoy the outdoors, but the events throughout May are incredible. Liberation Day is on May 9th, a day commemorating the island’s freedom following the German Occupation during World War II. The island-wide celebration has a central hub in St Peter Port with a festival featuring parades, live music, fireworks and so much more. It is the best opportunity to experience the local community and the spirit of Guernsey.
Guernsey in June
Summer has arrived and June in Guernsey is simply breathtaking. The warmth of the month makes days by the beach extremely enjoyable, plus, it is the perfect time to make the best of Guernsey’s watersporting opportunities. With the Channel Islands having one of the largest tidal ranges in the world, June is an excellent time to grab your board and ride the waves. For those who prefer laying by the pool rather than lounging on the beach, June is prime time to soak up Guernsey’s summer sun at your hotel. Alternatively, you can head to La Vallette Bathing Pools in St Peter Port for a swim in one of four coastal swimming spots. The island is overflowing with activity throughout June with plenty to see, lots to do and events popping up every other day. Outside of the school holidays, it is the best chance to experience Guernsey in summer without the intense crowds that July and August can bring.
Guernsey in July
With the school holidays falling in mid-July, Guernsey in July has two different personalities. The start of July has a great summer vibe but a more laid-back feel whilst at the end of July, Guernsey becomes the ultimate family holiday destination. Heading into the peak tourist months, you can expect Guernsey to be busy. However, the chilled lifestyle and abundance of open space mean that summertime Guernsey remains incredibly enjoyable. Enjoy warm mornings by the sea before retreating indoors to escape the heat in the afternoon, visiting one of the island’s top attractions.
Guernsey in August
While Guernsey in August may be the busiest month, that is no reason not to visit. Guernsey is a phenomenal family retreat in August with endless activities for the kids to get involved in. During August, you can experience the oldest and leading agricultural and horticultural event, The West Show. Established over 100 years ago, this is a weekend full of entertainment, exhibits, and a funfair. August also brings the Channel Island’s biggest festival to Guernsey’s neighbouring island during Alderney Week. If you are looking for some lively entertainment, you can island hop and attend one of the famous Alderney Bunker and Quarry Parties.
Guernsey in September
After the busy summer period, Guernsey in September is a really relaxing time on the island. Still retaining some of the heat from the summer months but at a more comfortable level, September is a great time to explore Guernsey either on foot or two wheels. Attractions are still fully open, allowing visitors to enjoy them with lower crowd levels. September is the last month for the Candie Concerts held on a Sunday afternoon in the stunning surroundings of the landscaped gardens. Plus, the Havelet Regatta often falls on the first weekend of September, an annual traditional event offering a full day of family-friendly activities including various boat races, swimming competitions and fun challenges like tug-of-war.
Guernsey in October
There is no other month when Guernsey’s landscape is more beautiful than in October. With autumn in full swing, the exquisite scenery that comes with it is simply unrivalled. Boasting a warm colour palette across the island, Guernsey in October offers breathtaking walks as you explore coastal trails and woodland walkways, all popping with reds and oranges. Most attractions are still open, albeit, many operating off-peak hours and with Halloween at the end of the month, the island’s activity calendar is bursting with family-friendly fun, just in time for half term.
Guernsey in November
Offering the best of autumn with a hint of the festive season, November is a month that straddles the seasons and does not disappoint. Although many attractions have now closed for the winter, this means that crowd levels are extremely low and November is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a quiet side of Guernsey before the Christmas celebrations kick off the following month. Guernsey provides the perfect cosy escape with gorgeous spots for autumnal walks, boutique hotels complete with fireplaces and cosy nooks, plus, coastal eateries that take in the breathtaking early sunset that appears this time of year.
Guernsey in December
After the peak summer season, December is the second busiest time on the island. Bursting with festive spirit, Guernsey has extra life in it throughout the month, and there are an incredible number of activities to get involved in. Every village is twinkling with lights, and Christmas trees appear to be on every corner, with Victor the Petit Train taking visitors on tours of St Peter Port to admire them all. Christmas concerts are performed almost every night in December, and with festive markets popping up in the capital, there are plenty of seasonal flavours to taste and yuletide gifts to purchase.
